Why go

Rachel Lake is a classic overnight with established campsites, and you can push on to Rampart Lakes, Lila Lake or Alta Peak.

The trail gets steep after the Canyon Creek crossing, gaining about 1,200 feet in roughly a mile on roots, rocks and big step-ups.

Our take: A trail with lots of roots and rocks. Worth it, but go slow on the steep part.

Getting there

Take I-90 to exit 62 (Kachess Lake), turn left, and follow Forest Road 49 toward Kachess Lake. Follow the signs to Lake Kachess Campground, then turn left on Forest Road 4930. The trailhead is at the end of the road, about 4 miles from that turn.
